9 perfect Nadine Coyle moments that prove she is nothing short of a national treasure

What did we do to deserve someone as pure as Nadine Coyle?

1. Her monumental appearance on Popstars where she lied about her age.

This one is too obvious, so we’ll just get it out of the way first.

At just sixteen years of age, Nadine Coyle managed to become the talk of the country after her unforgettable stint on 2002 reality show Popstars.

Now, sixteen years later, the date of birth Nadine Coyle gave (the fufteynth of the sikth) is celebrated as Nadine Coyle Day to some, and St. Nadine’s Day to others.

Can you think of a more inspirational story? Today you might feel like Nadine Coyle pretending to search for her passport in a holdall with Linda Martin breathing down your neck. But tomorrow? Tomorrow you could be in Girls Aloud, who are considerably more famous than Linda Martin. Hang in there. Things will get better.

2. When Nadine had to face the press after the Popstars scandal, and she truly did not give a f**k.

She did everything perfectly. At the tender age of sixteen, Nadine used this massive scandal to lay down the foundations for a career spanning another sixteen years. On the 18th of January, 2002, Nadine appeared on The Late Late Show with Pat Kenny to discuss her experience.

Pat Kenny solemnly states “You knew when you went for this, that it said 18.” Almost giggling, Nadine replied “I know!” Iconique.

Pat Kenny tried to set a really serious tone for the interview, but Nadine was beaming. Absolutely chuffed with herself. Honestly, it’s impossible to not admire her.

I went and I never, ever expected for one minute that I’d get as far as I did, and I did. I just kept getting through to the next round and then the next round and I was like “Why are they still letting me through?” But they were, and it just got out of control, I was loving every moment of it.

Nadine had zero regrets. She had just pulled off one of the greatest scams in Irish history. Pat Kenny showed her some of the headlines she had made in the days following her expulsion from Popstars.

Pat asked her “They’re the kind of things that were written about you. How did you react when you saw that stuff?” Nadine responded:

I didn’t react the way I thought I’d react. I thought I’d have been devastated and heartbroken that people had written things but I took it okay, because they weren’t writing anything that was untrue. I did lie about my age, so they’re not lying writing it.

Why does it seem like Nadine was born for this interview?

3. Before the year was out, she joined Girls Aloud.

Anyone else remember how Christmas 2002 was just spent diving at the TV to point out to your cousins which one of the singers in Girls Aloud was “the Irish one who got kicked off Popstars”?

Sound of the Underground is still a complete banger, too. This single helped Girls Aloud break the record of shortest space between the formation of a band and their first no.1 single.

4. In 2008, Nadine found that the nightlife in Los Angeles was lacking. So, she opened an Irish pub on Sunset Beach called ‘Nadine’s Irish Mist’.

Unfortunately, Nadine’s Irish Mist shut down in 2015, but is there anything more wholesome than our Nadine going over to the States to open an Irish pub? No. Probably not. A true Derry Girl.

5. When she said her favourite smell is bleach.

A BBC profile of the singer from September 2017 opens with the line:

“My favourite smell is bleach,” says Nadine Coyle. “If I walk into the house and there’s things being bleached, it just makes me feel at home, euphoric almost.”

On top of everything else, Nadine has a great sense of humour. And she’s very relatable too.

6. When she blew the world’s mind with her pronunciation of the word ‘flour’.

So far, this video (which was only shared on the 19th of June) has been liked over 106,000 times.

A day later, Nadine responded, calling us all edjits.

This woman has been famous for sixteen years, internationally, and she still uses the insult ‘edjits’. Fame has not changed her.

7. When she fought to get the tricolour onto the cover of a Girls Aloud album.

Back in 2007, Nadine told Hot Press that when she saw that the Girls Aloud Greatest Hits album cover featured a Union Jack, she had to take action.

I was like, “What is this?” If you’re going to put the Union Jack on, you have to put an Ireland flag on.”  And what did they do? They only went and put an Ivory Coast flag on. It’s okay Nadine. We know that you did what you could.

8. Her comeback.

Thank you Nadine.

 9. When she suggested that she might be on next year’s series of Derry Girls.

Nadine’s a massive fan of the TV show, which just happens to be based on the secondary school she attended in Derry. Since Nadine and Lisa McGee went to the same school and are familiar with each other, Nadine said she’d have a little chat about getting involved in series two.

If there’s one story we could see happening on Derry Girls, it’s Michelle lying about her age to get onto a televised national singing competition, only to get caught in a web of lies. How perfect would it be if Nadine played the role of Linda Martin in this situation?
